Tropisms (1939) captured micro-movements of consciousness; her subsequent novels dissolved character and plot into psychological flux. She became a major figure of avant-garde fiction alongside Robbe-Grillet and Butor. Her writing tracks what happens beneath speech—the sub-conversations that ordinary language masks. She lived to ninety-nine, still writing, still dissecting the flickers of awareness.
