Nicholas Mosley was the son of fascist leader Oswald Mosley, a fact he spent his life grappling with. "Hopeful Monsters" (1990) won the Whitbread Prize—the fifth volume of a sequence exploring twentieth-century history through ideas and relationships. "The Impossible Object" (1969) was shortlisted for the Booker. Mosley's fiction is difficult and rewarding, philosophical in method, ambitious in scope.
