Nina Bawden wrote novels for adults and children for fifty years. "Circles of Deceit" (1987) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize—a novel about a painter confronting his past as wartime child evacuee. Her children's books, including "Carrie's War," remain beloved. Bawden survived the Potters Bar rail crash in 2002, in which her husband died. She continued writing until her death in 2012.
