NoViolet Bulawayo was born in Zimbabwe and moved to the United States at eighteen. "We Need New Names" (2013) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize—a debut following a girl from a Zimbabwean shantytown to Detroit. "Glory" (2022) allegorizes Zimbabwe's political turmoil through a nation of animals. Bulawayo's prose is rhythmic and inventive, finding new language for displacement.
