Oliver La Farge won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1930 for "Laughing Boy," a novel about Navajo life. La Farge was an anthropologist who worked among Southwestern tribes; his fiction brought sympathetic attention to Native American experience at a time when such attention was rare. His reputation has faded, but his prize remains a landmark.
