Patrick deWitt's "The Sisters Brothers" (2011) won the Governor General's Literary Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize—a Western about two assassin brothers in the Gold Rush, comic and violent and tender. The Canadian author's subsequent novels—"Undermajordomo Minor," "French Exit"—continue his deadpan style. DeWitt finds absurdity in genre conventions.
