Patrick Neate won the Whitbread Novel Award in 2001 for "Twelve Bar Blues," a debut spanning three continents and a century, linked by the blues and its travels from Africa through America to London. Neate has also written nonfiction about hip-hop culture. His fiction combines literary ambition with popular music's energy.
