Patrick Rambaud won the Prix Goncourt in 1997 for "The Battle," a historical novel about Napoleon's victory at Essling. The French author writes meticulously researched historical fiction; his Napoleon trilogy brought the emperor to life for contemporary readers. Rambaud began as a literary parodist before turning to serious historical subjects.
