Paul de Man was a Belgian-born literary theorist who became the leading figure of the Yale School of deconstruction. He taught at Cornell, Johns Hopkins, and Yale, and his work on rhetoric, allegory, and the impossibility of reading shaped literary theory in the 1970s and 1980s.
