Paul Kingsnorth wrote "The Wake" (2014) in a "shadow tongue"—a hybrid of Old English and modern English that forces readers to work for every sentence. The novel follows a Lincolnshire farmer resisting the Norman Conquest. It was longlisted for the Booker Prize. Kingsnorth is also an environmental activist and essayist; his fiction extends his investigation into what has been lost.
