Paul Scott won the Booker Prize in 1977 for "Staying On," a novel about an elderly British couple remaining in India after independence. Scott is best known for the Raj Quartet, four novels chronicling the end of British India through interlocking perspectives. "The Jewel in the Crown" became a celebrated television series. Scott died in 1978, shortly after his Booker win.
