Paulette Jiles's "News of the World" (2016) was a National Book Award finalist—a Western about an elderly news reader escorting a young girl captured by Kiowa across post-Civil War Texas. The Canadian-American author began as a poet; her prose carries poetry's compression. The novel became a film starring Tom Hanks. Jiles died in 2025.
