Per Wahlöö was a Swedish author and journalist who, with Maj Sjöwall, created the Martin Beck police procedural series. A committed Marxist, he used the crime novel form to critique Swedish social democracy. He died of pancreatic cancer shortly after completing the tenth and final Martin Beck novel.
