Pete Dexter won the National Book Award in 1988 for "Paris Trout," a novel about a racist murder in 1950s Georgia. Dexter was a newspaper columnist in Philadelphia until he was nearly beaten to death investigating a story; his fiction carries that violence. "Deadwood" and "Train" continued his investigation into American brutality.
