Peter Esterhazy was a Hungarian novelist and essayist, a member of one of Europe's oldest aristocratic families. His postmodern, linguistically inventive novels — including Celestial Harmonies, Helping Verbs of the Heart, and The Book of Hrabal — are considered among the finest achievements of contemporary Hungarian literature. He was a leading figure in the post-1989 Central European literary renaissance.
