Peter Taylor won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1987 for "A Summons to Memphis," a novel about a middle-aged man called home to prevent his father's remarriage. Taylor spent his career writing about the upper-middle-class South with quiet precision. His stories appeared in The New Yorker for decades. "The Old Forest" (1985) is his essential collection.
