P.H. Newby won the first Booker Prize in 1969 for "Something to Answer For," a novel about an Englishman in Port Said during the Suez Crisis. Newby was a BBC administrator who wrote quietly amid the noise of his day job. His prize victory launched the Booker's history; his novel has not remained as famous as the award.
