Philip Pullman created "His Dark Materials," a fantasy trilogy that became one of the most celebrated works of children's literature—and one of the most controversial. "The Golden Compass" (1995), "The Subtle Knife" (1997), and "The Amber Spyglass" (2000) follow a girl across parallel worlds in a story that takes on the church, original sin, and the nature of consciousness. Pullman is an atheist whose work engages deeply with religion. He has also written Victorian thrillers and fairy tales.
