Pierre Corneille was the founder of French classical tragedy and one of the great dramatists of the seventeenth century. His plays — Le Cid, Horace, Cinna, and Polyeucte — established the conventions of French tragic theater. Known for his heroic themes and his exploration of duty, honor, and political will, he dominated the French stage before the rise of Racine.
