Pramoedya Ananta Toer was an Indonesian novelist and the most important writer in Indonesian literature. He was imprisoned for fourteen years under the Suharto regime and dictated the Buru Quartet from memory to fellow prisoners. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize multiple times.
