Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist and nature writer whose Silent Spring is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Her earlier books The Sea Around Us and The Edge of the Sea combined scientific accuracy with literary beauty. She persisted in writing Silent Spring despite terminal cancer and industry opposition.
