Radclyffe Hall was a British novelist and poet best known for The Well of Loneliness, a pioneering novel of lesbian identity. Born Marguerite Radclyffe-Hall, she published several novels and volumes of poetry, winning the Prix Femina and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Adam's Breed in 1926. The obscenity trial of The Well of Loneliness made her the most publicly visible lesbian in Britain.
