Rashid I. Khalidi is an American historian of the modern Middle East. He was born in New York in 1948 and studied at Yale and Oxford, where he earned his doctorate. He taught at the American University of Beirut, the University of Chicago and Columbia University, where he holds the Edward Said Chair in Modern Arab Studies. He edited the Journal of Palestine Studies for many years. His books include Palestinian Identity (1997), Resurrecting Empire, The Iron Cage, and The Hundred Years' War on Palestine (2020). His work draws on Arabic, Ottoman and Western archives and family papers, including those of his own Jerusalem family. He traces how Palestinians came to see themselves as a nation and how outside powers shaped their history. Palestinian Identity is a standard text in Middle East studies, and his later books reached a wide general readership.
