Richard Russo won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2002 for "Empire Falls," a novel about a diner manager in a dying Maine mill town. Russo writes about working-class New England with humor and sympathy; his characters are stuck but never reduced. "Nobody's Fool" (1993) and "Straight Man" (1997) established his voice.
