Richard Wright's "Native Son" (1940) changed American literature. The novel follows Bigger Thomas, a young Black man in Chicago whose life is shaped by the violence of racism—until he commits violence of his own. Wright wrote with anger and clarity about what America did to Black lives. His memoir "Black Boy" (1945) continued the indictment. Wright left America for Paris and never returned.
