Robert Alter is an American literary critic, Hebraist, and professor emeritus at UC Berkeley, widely regarded as one of the foremost scholars of the Hebrew Bible and modern Hebrew literature in the English-speaking world. His translations of the Bible and his critical studies of both biblical and modern Hebrew narrative have shaped the field for over half a century.
