Robert Burton was an English scholar and clergyman who spent his career at Oxford as a student and then librarian. He published The Anatomy of Melancholy under the pseudonym Democritus Junior in 1621 and continued revising it until his death, with the sixth edition appearing posthumously. He never published another book.
