Robert Graves survived the trenches of World War I and spent the rest of his long life writing poetry, criticism, mythology, and historical novels. "I, Claudius" (1934) and its sequel "Claudius the God" brought ancient Rome to life through the stuttering emperor's memoirs. Graves's "Goodbye to All That" (1929) is one of the great war memoirs.
