Robert Lowell was an American poet from a prominent Boston family. His early work was formally dense and Catholic in orientation; his middle period inaugurated confessional poetry with Life Studies. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice and the National Book Award. He was a prominent antiwar activist during the Vietnam era.
