Austrian novelist who spent his life writing an unfinished masterpiece. Born in Klagenfurt, trained as an engineer and philosopher, he published Young Törless in 1906 and short stories that established his reputation. Then came The Man Without Qualities—a vast novel set in 1913 Austria, examining a society about to destroy itself. He worked on it from 1921 until his death in Swiss exile in 1942, leaving it incomplete. The novel combines essayistic reflection with narrative, satirizes Austria-Hungary while mourning it, and remains one of the most ambitious works in any language.
