French · 1914–1980
Romain Gary won the Prix Goncourt twice—the only writer to do so, since his second win was under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. Gary served as a Free French pilot and worked as a diplomat. His life was as novelistic as his fiction. He died by suicide in 1980.
