Rose Macaulay was a British novelist, essayist, and poet. She published over thirty books, ranging from social comedies to serious fiction and travel writing. The Towers of Trebizond, her last novel, is widely considered her masterpiece. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1958, shortly before her death.
