Ruta Sepetys is a Lithuanian-American novelist who writes historical fiction about forgotten chapters of history. Between Shades of Gray, her debut, drew on her family heritage and extensive interviews with deportation survivors. Her subsequent novels have illuminated stories from Franco's Spain and postwar Germany.
