Salman Rushdie won the Booker Prize in 1981 for "Midnight's Children," a novel about India's independence through a child born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947. "The Satanic Verses" (1988) led to a fatwa; Rushdie spent years in hiding. He was attacked onstage in 2022 and survived. His influence on postcolonial literature is immense.
