Samuel Johnson was the preeminent English man of letters of the eighteenth century, compiler of A Dictionary of the English Language, author of The Rambler, and the subject of Boswell's Life of Johnson. His critical essays and the Lives of the Poets established the standards for English literary criticism and literary biography.
