Sándor Márai

Hungarian · 1900–1989

Sándor Márai was a Hungarian novelist and journalist, one of the most prominent literary figures of interwar Hungary. He went into exile after the Communist takeover in 1948 and spent his remaining decades in Italy and the United States, largely forgotten until the posthumous rediscovery of his work in the 1990s. Embers, his most celebrated novel, became an international bestseller decades after its original publication.
