Seamus Deane's "Reading in the Dark" (1996) was shortlisted for the Booker Prize—a novel about a boy in Derry learning his family's secrets during the Troubles. Deane was primarily a scholar and critic; this was his only novel. He founded the Field Day Theatre Company with Brian Friel. He died in 2021.
