Seichō Matsumoto is considered the father of Japanese social mystery fiction. A self-educated writer who worked as a newspaper advertising designer, he revolutionized Japanese crime writing by shifting focus from puzzle-solving to social criticism. His vast output—over 450 works—explored postwar Japan's corruption, class divisions, and institutional failures through meticulously researched procedurals.
