Sergei Dovlatov was a Russian-American writer whose autobiographical fiction, published mostly in émigré journals, is celebrated for its economy, humor, and precision. Unable to publish in the Soviet Union, he emigrated to New York in 1978 and became one of the most beloved Russian writers of his generation. He died of heart failure at forty-eight.
