Sigrid Undset won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928 for her medieval Norwegian sagas. "Kristin Lavransdatter," a trilogy following a woman from birth to death in fourteenth-century Norway, is her masterwork. Undset converted to Catholicism and fled Norway during Nazi occupation. Her historical fiction brings the Middle Ages to life.
