Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes genre fiction that refuses to stay in its lane. Born in Mexico and based in Vancouver, she combines horror, noir, and fantasy with settings that range from 1970s Mexico City to 1930s Shanghai. Mexican Gothic (2020) brought her to wide attention—a gothic horror set in a decaying 1950s mansion that earned comparisons to Daphne du Maurier and Shirley Jackson. But she'd been publishing steadily since 2015: Signal to Noise, Certain Dark Things, Gods of Jade and Shadow. Each book takes a familiar genre framework and relocates it, showing that noir and fantasy were never exclusively European or American traditions. She also edits anthologies and runs Innsmouth Free Press, championing speculative fiction from underrepresented voices.
