Stanley Middleton shared the Booker Prize in 1974 for "Holiday," a novel about a man on vacation with his estranged wife. Middleton set his fiction in the English Midlands and wrote about ordinary lives with patient attention. He published over forty novels and was largely overlooked despite his prize.
