Stanley Milgram was an American social psychologist at Yale and then the City University of New York whose experiments on obedience to authority became among the most famous and controversial in the history of psychology. He also conducted research on the small-world phenomenon — the basis for 'six degrees of separation.' He died of a heart attack at 51.
