Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and science historian at Harvard who wrote the monthly column 'This View of Life' in Natural History magazine for over two decades. His scientific contributions include the theory of punctuated equilibrium; his popular books made him one of the most widely read science writers of the late twentieth century.
