Su Tong is a leading figure of Chinese avant-garde fiction. His novellas and novels, set in both historical and contemporary China, are known for their sensuous prose and unflinching depictions of desire, violence, and social hierarchy. His best-known works include Raise the Red Lantern, Rice, and My Life as Emperor. The film adaptation of Raise the Red Lantern by Zhang Yimou brought him international fame.
