Susan Sontag won the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America," a historical novel about a Polish actress in nineteenth-century California. Sontag was better known as an essayist—"Notes on Camp," "On Photography," "Illness as Metaphor"—than as a novelist. Her criticism changed how Americans thought about culture. She died in 2004.
