Susan Straight's "Highwire Moon" (2001) was a finalist for the National Book Award—a novel about a Oaxacan woman searching for her daughter across the California-Mexico border. Straight writes about Southern California's multiethnic communities with documentary attention. She grew up and continues to live in Riverside.
