Tahar Ben Jelloun won the Prix Goncourt in 1987 for "The Sacred Night," a novel continuing the story of a woman raised as a man in Morocco. "This Blinding Absence of Light" (2004) recreates the experience of political prisoners in Hassan II's desert prisons. Ben Jelloun writes about Morocco with lyrical intensity and political urgency.
