American · b. 1941
Ted Orland is an American photographer, writer and teacher. He studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and in the early 1970s worked as an assistant to Ansel Adams, helping run Adams's workshops in Yosemite. He later wrote about that experience in Man and Moment: Ansel Adams (1989), and he has published other books on photography, including The View from the Studio Door. His best-known work is Art & Fear, written with David Bayles and first published in 1993. The book is a short, practical look at the doubts that lead artists to stop working, and it has stayed in print for decades. It is widely used in art schools and creative-writing classes. Orland has taught photography and led workshops, and he lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he continues to make and exhibit his own photographs.
