Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" (1925) and "Sister Carrie" (1900) established American naturalism. Dreiser wrote about desire, poverty, and the ruthlessness of American capitalism with documentary attention. His prose was criticized as clumsy; his vision was undeniable. He died in 1945.
